Breakfast & Brunch:

Bacon Honey-Glazed Donuts

Slow weekend mornings just got a lot sweeter with these insanely delicious homemade donuts. Sweetened naturally with honey and drizzled with an irresistible bacon honey glaze, they are impossible to put down (and you don’t have to).

Yield 12 donuts
Prep Time 15 minutes
Total Time 45 minutes

Ingredients

For the donuts:

  • 1 large egg
  • ½ cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup Nature Nate’s pure honey
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • Vegetable spray
  • Special equipment: Donut baking pan

For the Bacon Honey-Glaze:

  • ½ cup Nature Nate’s pure honey
  • 1/3 lb bacon

Directions

Heat oven to 350 degrees.  In a blender, combine the egg, buttermilk, applesauce, cinnamon, and honey, and pulse until well-mixed. Add the flour, baking powder, and baking soda, and blend on low until completely mixed, pausing to scrape down the blender. Spray the donut baking dish very well, then pour the donut mixture into the mold. Wipe clear the center where the hole is, and bake for 20 minutes.

Meanwhile, make the bacon honey glaze. Bake or fry the bacon until crispy, and drain off fat. Chop fine. In a medium saucepan, simmer the honey on medium heat for five minutes. When the donuts are baked, use a wooden spoon or chopstick to gently pull the donuts out of the mold. Very carefully dip the donuts in the warm honey, place on a wire cookie rack, and sprinkle with chopped bacon. Repeat with the remaining donuts, and allow to cool slightly before serving.

Helpful hint: place parchment paper under the cookie rack to make cleaning up easier.
