Honey Facts:

How Do You Know If Honey Is Good Quality?

How do you know if honey is good quality? For centuries and without any help from mankind, bees have created nature’s most consistently delicious and versatile sweetener. Natural honey is flavourful, and in its purest form, it makes our lives better in so many ways.

Somewhere along the way, some honey companies took shortcuts that shortchange our families. With so many types of honey on the market shelf, it’s not always easy to know which are pure, simple honey from those with fillers, corn syrup and even pesticides. Naturally, we want the purest honey for the people we love.

In two decades of working with responsible beekeepers, academia and the people who know and love honey, we have learned a thing or two. We’re happy to share simple tips for spotting and choosing real honey, every time.

Good quality honey, raw & unfiltered

Not all honey bears are created equal. Do you know where your honey comes from?

Real honey is responsibly sourced & thoroughly tested

The original source of honey can tell so much of the story. Pollen is traceable to the precise plant and region from which a bee took its nectar. So, before putting honey on your table, know the honey source.

Our beekeepers must uphold our high standards: we seek like-minded beekeepers who care about bees and the community, and uphold the commitment to the quality of their honey. Upholding this commitment is our promise. We continually foster strong relationships with our beekeepers and can ensure that every honey bottle we put an orange Nature Nate’s label on a bottle that only has North American honey in it.

We respect, we trust and we verify: sample testing the honey that arrives from hives all across the U.S. to our farms. No pesticides, herbicides, corn or rice syrup make it past our testers. Nature Nate’s only bottles pure honey and we believe that all honey companies should adhere to proactive testing of honey supply so customers can rest assured.

Our many relationships with North American beekeepers means we can bring you honey from multiple varietals to create a consistent and delicious taste and texture. So, there’s a blend of pollen in that classic Nature Nate’s honey on your kitchen counter, all made by North American bees. We always know the source of our honey. Do you?

Real honey = minimally processed

There are no regulations for honey producers. While many care about the honey they produce, some have found ways to cut corners to increase revenue. Because there currently is no governing body to regularly test honey supply, we have taken it upon ourselves to ensure that our beekeeper partners comply with guidelines set by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Our standards go higher: Nature Nate’s honey never includes adulteration of any kind and must have low moisture content and proper acidity. Our testing also checks for commonly used pesticides or antibiotics and verifies that beekeepers added nothing to the end product. This makes us feel good about bringing our raw and unfiltered honey to your table.

When we receive honey from the hive, we gently warm it to help protect it’s natural properties. While some companies turn to high heating processes for a quick pour and speedy production, we love the slow and low approach for the resulting taste and quality. With honey, patience truly is a virtue.

Finally, crystallised honey means your honey is delicious, good to eat, and has the good stuff: pollen that remains because the honey is minimally processed. Crystallization is a natural process where liquid honey turns semi-solid, with an almost “granular” look. It is telltale sign you’re buying real honey.
